The Connected Kitchen

Fractional creative director for Innit, 2015 to 2016

Strategy:

Nobody asked about the image recognition. They asked what to cook tonight. That moved Innit from a technology company toward a content and media company, and the product led with recipes rather than sensors.

Design:

The phone app leads with a plate and keeps ingredient tracking underneath, ripeness and what to pair it with. The tablet gets a kitchen mode for cooking, and the oven gets a screen.

Leadership:

Through Portal as fractional creative director, 2015 to 2016. All the design came from me, a design department of one, across the phone, the tablet and the screen on the oven door.

User testing at Innit kept landing on the same sentence: tell me what to cook tonight from what is already in my fridge.

Product in Hand

Dinner first, sensors underneath.

'What's for dinner, Chris?' over three plates shot from above. Tap one and the recipe carries its ingredient list, and each ingredient its ripeness curve. On the tablet, kitchen mode: one step per screen, readable across a counter.

Product in Life

Cook what you already have.

The fridge camera can see the tomatoes are ripe. The app suggests what to cook tonight from what is already in there, and the oven takes the recipe. You taste the chicken before you trust the platform.

Product in Culture

The last room online.

Every appliance is getting a screen and a login. The kitchen went online as gadgets rather than a meal. A fridge counts 124 ingredients. People asked what to cook tonight, so the count went underneath and dinner went on top.
